Rakshabandhan Essay in English
India is a country of festivals. Every festival here brings with it the message of happiness, brotherhood and love. One of these important and sacred festivals is Rakshabandhan. This festival is a symbol of the promise of love, trust and protection of brother and sister. Rakshabandhan means “The bond of protection”.
The festival of Rakshabandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the month of Savan. On this day, sisters tie a Raksha Sutra i.e. Rakhi on their brother’s wrist and wish him long life and happiness and prosperity. The brother promises to protect his sister and gives her a gift.
Many stories are famous about when and how this festival started. According to a famous story, once there was a war between gods and demons. Indra, the king of gods, was worried about his protection. His wife Indrani tied a sacred thread on his wrist after reciting a mantra. With the power of this thread, Indra won the war. Since then the tradition of tying Raksha Sutra has been going on.
Another story is related to Mahabharata. When Shri Krishna got hurt during the killing of Shishupal and his hand started bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari and tied it on his hand. Krishna accepted it as a promise of protection and protected Draupadi throughout his life.
