What is Subtraction ?

Subtraction is the process of taking something away.

Substraction Facts

  • ‘-‘ indicates subtraction.
  • The sign ‘-‘ should be used instead of ‘take away’.
  • When we subtract 1 from a number, we get the number immediately before the number we want to subtract”.
  • Subtracting a number from itself always yields a zero.
  • Whether the subtraction is done vertically or horizontally, the answer remains the same.

 

Example

A box contains five fresh oranges out of which two are rotten oranges. What are the remaining oranges?

  • Fresh Oranges = 5
  • Rotten Oranges = 2
  • Remaining Oranges = 5 – 2 =3

9 bikes were parked in the garage. Out of which 5 bikes departed. What is the remaining number of bikes?

  • Total bikes = 9
  • Bikes departed = 5
  • Remaining bikes = 9 – 5 = 4

  6. Shweta had 7 apples. She gave 3 apples to her friend. How many do she still have?
