Answer the following questions :-

(a) Why is this region known as Chhattisgarh?
The region is named Chhattisgarh due to its historical importance during the Kalchuri period. The term “Chhattisgarh” means “36 forts” in Hindi, which comes from the number of forts present in the Ratanpur and Raipur estates during the reign of the Kalchuri kings.

(b) How did political development take place in Chhattisgarh?
The political development of Chhattisgarh has gone through various phases, starting from the rule of the Kalchuri kings to the subsequent changes under different rulers. The Kalchuri dynasty ruled the region from the end of the 10th century until the mid-18th century. After that, in 1741, the Marathas took over. The Bhonsle rulers of Nagpur, especially Rajkumar Bimbaji Bhosle, governed Chhattisgarh from Ratanpur. Later, there was a shift toward feudal rule (Subedari), followed by British interference, leading to British rule from 1854 to 1947. This period witnessed the presence of several feudal estates and zamindars. The people of Chhattisgarh also had societal leaders like Guru Ghasi Das, who brought about social awakening, and Veer Narayan Singh, who led the 1857 Struggle in Chhattisgarh against the British. The region was marked by both colonial rule and indigenous uprisings, contributing to its political evolution.
