Class 5 Evolution of Computers

Charles Babbage is widely known as the father of computing for his design of the computer in 1822 and 1833. It is generally accepted that Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer as she created an algorithm to calculate Bernoulli numbers using Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine.

The ENIAC, invented in 1946, was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer. This massive machine weighed over 27 tons and was used for complex calculations.

The UNIVAC I, designed in 1951, was the first computer capable of processing both numeric and alphanumeric data. It was used for business, scientific research, and government operations.

Computers can be categorized into generations based on their computing power, storage capacity, physical size, and cost. Computers have evolved from their beginnings in the 1940s and 1950s to today’s sophisticated and powerful machines.

QUE ANS-

Q-Name the first mechanical computer.

A-The Analytical Engine, invented by Charles Babbage in 1833, is considered to be the first mechanical computer.

Q-Who is considered as the father of computing?

A-Charles Babbage is recognized as the FATHER of computing.

Q-Which was the first electronical digital computer and who invented it?

A-John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert invented ENIAC, the first electronic digital computer capable of performing various tasks, in 1946.

Q-List characteristics of fourth-generation computers.

A-Fourth Generation computers incorporate microprocessor technology, and are equipped with input and output devices such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer. These computers rely on specialized software, such as RDBMS, to manage vast amounts of data.

SHORT NOTES

ABACUS

The first known mechanical calculating device was called the Abacus, which originated in China. It consisted of a wooden frame with rods containing beads, and was divided into two sections known as “Heaven” and “Earth”. This device was primarily used for performing calculations.

Boolean logic

George Boole developed a way of solving math problems by asking questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no”. He then linked these questions to the binary system, where “yes” is represented by 1 and “no” by 0. This method, known as Boolean logic, is used to design computer circuits.
