The large intestine is wider and shorter than the small intestine. It is about 1.5 meters in length. Its function is to absorb water and some salts from the undigested food material. The remaining waste passes into the rectum and remains there as semi-solid feces. The fecal matter is removed through the anus from time to time. This is called egestion.

 

Define Nutrition and What are the five steps of nutrition in animals?

The process of taking in food and utilizing it by an animal is called animal nutrition. Nutrition in animals takes place in five steps: Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, and Egestion.

 

Define the following terms:-

 

Ingestion :

Ingestion is the process of taking food into the body.

 

Digestion :

The process of breaking down large, insoluble substances into small, water-soluble particles (which can be absorbed by the body) is called digestion.

 

Absorption :

The process of digested food passing through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream is called absorption

 

Assimilation :

Assimilation is the process by which the absorbed food is used for energy, growth, and repair by the body cells.

 

Egestion:

Egestion is the process of removing the undigested food from the body.

 

Alimentary Canal :

A long tube running from mouth to anus of a human being (or other animals) in which digestion and absorption of food take place is called the alimentary canal. The alimentary canal is also known as the gut or digestive tract.
