Class 6 Natural Resources – Air, Water And Land

Class 6 Natural Resources Air Water And Land | Class 6 Science Maharashtra Board Textbook Solutions and additional question answers for exam.

Fill in the blanks.

(a) The layer of ozone gas absorbs ………… rays that come from the

sun to the earth. [ultra violet]

(b) Of the total water available on the earth, fresh water forms ……percent.[0.3%]

(c) Both ……. and ……… constituents are present in the soil. [biotic and abiotic]

Why is it said that – ?

The ozone layer is a protective shell of the earth.

The Earth’s protective ozone layer absorbs much of the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation before it hits the surface. High UV radiation can harm living things, including people.

If the ozone layer depletes, more UV rays would reach Earth’s surface, causing many problems. UV rays can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and other health issues. It can damage habitats and animals.

Water is life.

Water is life because all living things on earth need it. Water is essential for all living cells and most cellular processes.

  • Plants—the main producers of the food web—need water to grow and reproduce. Without water, vegetation dies and the food chain collapses.
  • Animals including humans also need water. Water is needed for digestion, circulation and temperature control as our body is 60% water.
  • Water makes up most biological fluids, including blood, which provides nutrition and oxygen to cells and removes waste.
  • Earth’s ecology depends on water. The absorption and release of heat over a long period of time regulates the temperature.
  • Water is life because it sustains all life. Without water the earth would be lifeless.

Seawater is useful even though it is not potable.

Sea water has many uses such as-

  • Seawater is full of fish, shellfish and algae. Many of these creatures are commercially harvested from the sea because people eat them.
  • Recreation and tourism are common in marine waters. At the beach, many people swim, surf and play other water sports.
  • Goods and humans travel across the ocean. Ships and boats transport oil, natural gas and minerals across the world’s oceans, and passenger ships carry people on long-distance voyages.
  • Sea water is another energy source. OTEC uses the temperature difference between deep and shallow sea water to generate electricity.
  • Seawater is used in desalination, power plant cooling, and product production.
  • Seawater is a useful resource for many industries and activities.

What will happen if –

Microbes in the soil get destroyed.

Humus is formed when dead plants and animals decompose. Humus provides nutrients for the soil.Humus aerates and holds water in the soil. It improves soil fertility.Without microbes, humus cannot be formed and the soil cannot become fertile, making it unsuitable for plant growth. In addition, dead matter accumulates on land.

The number of vehicles and factories in your surroundings increases.

Air pollution is mainly caused by vehicles and factories.Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are released into the atmosphere.Pollutants like these harm the environment and people living nearby. So, air pollution will get worse as the number of cars and factories in our area grows.

The total supply of potable water is finished.

Water plays a very important role in the survival of living organisms. There is no life on earth without water.Water that can be used for drinking is not available in large quantities.

Plants and animals will not be able to survive if all the potable water on our planet is exhausted and life on earth will cease.
