Answer the following questions:

Question: Explain Air Composition?

Answer:  In the air, there are many gases including nitrogen, which makes up 78% of the total volume. Oxygen occupies 21%. There are 0.03% of carbon dioxide and other gases in the remaining 1% of the air. Dust and water vapor are also present in the air.

Question: What are the different properties of air?

Answer:  The different properties of air are

  • Air is colorless and hence invisible.
  • Air has mass
  • Air exerts pressure
  • Air can be compressed
  • air occupies space.

Question: Why is the ozone layer important to the atmosphere?

Answer:  A layer of ozone protects humans from the harmful effects of UV rays

Question: What are the most significant sources of air pollution?

Answer:  The main sources of air pollution are as follows:

  • Gases are released by industries and manufacturing.
  • Fossil fuels and coal are burned.
  • The burning of wood and the emission of smoke from vehicles.
  • Volcanoes, dust storms, and forest fires are some natural causes of air pollution.

Question: How will you prove that oxygen is needed for burning?

Answer:  Take a candle, a matchbox, and an empty glass tumbler. Light the candle and cover it with the inverted glass tumbler.

After a while, we will observe that the candle has been extinguished. This is due to the fact that when the candle is covered with a tumbler, the supply of oxygen is cut off, causing the candle to stop burning. This demonstrates that air supports combustion.

Question: Define air pollution. What are the primary effects of air pollution on living beings?

Answer:  Air pollution refers to the contamination of air with undesirable substances such as harmful gases, chemicals, dust particles, and so on that may be harmful to living beings.
