Section E – Short Answer Questions (3×5 = 15 marks)

36. What is atmosphere?
The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the Earth. It is made of gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.

37. What are the characteristics of air?
Air occupies space, has weight, and exerts pressure. Though we can’t see or smell it, we can feel it.

38. What is sedimentation and decantation?
In sedimentation, heavy particles settle down in water. In decantation, clear water is carefully poured out without disturbing the sediments.

39. Write any three uses of air.

Air helps in breathing.
Air helps in burning.
Air carries smells and sounds.

40. What is filtration? How is it done?
Filtration is the process to remove insoluble dirt from water using a filter. A filter paper is used in a funnel to separate solid particles.

Section F – Long Answer Questions (5×5 = 25 marks)

41. Explain the five layers of the atmosphere.

Troposphere: Nearest to Earth, weather changes occur here.
Stratosphere: Contains ozone layer, some planes fly here.
Mesosphere: Meteors burn in this layer.
Thermosphere: Thickest layer, space shuttles orbit here.
Exosphere: Outermost layer, air is very thin, satellites are here.

42. Describe the composition of air.
Air is made of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases like carbon dioxide, argon, helium, and neon. It also has dust, smoke, and water vapour.

43. What are the different methods used to clean water at home and in water works?

At home: Boiling, filtration, RO purifiers.
At water works: Sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination. Chlorine is used to kill germs.

44. What is air pressure? Explain with any one activity.
Air pressure is the force that air applies on surfaces.
Example: When we suck a drink with a straw, air pressure pushes the liquid up into the straw.

45. How is distilled water prepared? Write steps of distillation.

Water is heated to form vapour.
Vapour passes through a tube.
Cold water cools the vapour.
Vapour turns into water again.
Impurities are left behind. The clean water collected is distilled water.
