Answer the following questions:
What is the difference between living and non-living things?
- Living things are defined as anything that requires food, water, and air to survive.
- All humans and animals require food, water, and air to survive or live, so all humans and animals are living things.
- Non-living things are things that do not require food, water, or air to survive.
What characteristics do living beings have?
All living things share some characteristics that distinguish them from non-living things. The following are the characteristics of living things:
- Food, air, and water are essential for all living things.
- Living things can grow.
- Living things can move on their own.
- Living things have the ability to respond to stimuli (changes around them).
- All living things breathe (release energy from food).
- Living things remove waste
- Living things are capable to reproduce.
Explain what is stimuli with an example.
All living things react to changes in their environment. Stimuli are environmental changes to which living things respond. When we touch the leaves of a Mimosa plant, the leaves fold up. The “touch” of a finger is the stimulus in this case, and the Mimosa plant responds by folding its leaves.
What is respiration?
Respiration is a chemical process in which food absorbed by the body combines with oxygen and releases energy.
What is breathing?
The process of introducing air into the lungs through the nose and then releasing it through the nose is called breathing.
What is excretion?
Removing waste products from the body of an organism is called excretion.
What is reproduction?
The process by which an organism produces new members of its kind is called reproduction.
How do plants reproduce?
Plants also reproduce in a number of ways:
- Many plants reproduce by seeds
- Some plants reproduce by bulbs/tubers [POTATO]
- Some plants reproduce by STEM cuttings
What is habitat?
The location or environment in which a plant or animal lives is known as its habitat. A habitat gives the whole thing to the organisms which they want to live.
All the habitats may be divided into 2 groups:
- Terrestrial habitats, and
- Aquatic habitats.
What is adaptation?
Adaptation refers to the presence of specific body features (or habits) that allow a plant or animal to live in a specific habitat.
What is a desert?
A desert is a dry, sand-covered area of land with little or no vegetation (plants, trees, etc.). Scarcity of water and high temperatures are the major factors in the desert habitat.
How would you describe the adaptations of desert plants?
The following are some of the adaptations that help desert plants survive in the hot and dry environment of a desert:
- Desert plants have leaves that are either absent, very small, or present in the form of spines.
- This helps to reduces water loss from the leaves due to transpiration.
- Photosynthesis is usually carried out by the green stems of desert plants.
- The stems of desert plants are also covered with a thick waxy layer that prevents water loss.
- Most of the desert plants have long roots which go deep into the soil for absorbing water.
What are the adaptations of the mountainous region?
- Mountain trees are typically cone-shaped with sloping branches.
- The shape of the mountain trees allows rain and snow to easily slide off without damaging the branches and leaves.
- Because many mountain trees have small, needle-like leaves, they lose very little water in windy conditions.
- The most common adaptation found in all animals living in cold environments such as mountains is thick skin or fur to protect them from the cold environment.
What is the significance of speed in grassland?
Grassland is a large area of grass-covered land used for grazing. In grassland habitats, there are few trees and few places for animals to hide. As a result, speed is essential for animals living in grassland habitats.
What are the adaptations of aquatic animals?
- To survive in water, they must have special adaptations.
- Many marine creatures have streamlined bodies that allow them to move easily in sea water.
- The majority of sea creatures have gills, which allow them to breathe by using oxygen dissolved in water.
How do dolphins and whales take in air?
Dolphins and whales breathe in air through nostrils [also called blowholes] which is on the tops of their heads. When dolphins and whales swim near the surface of the water, they breathe in air through blowholes. They come to the surface of the water to breathe in air.
Give examples of aquatic plants that float on the water’s surface.
Water-lettuce and water hyacinth
Give some examples of aquatic plants that are partially submerged in water.
Water lily and lotus.
Give examples of aquatic plants that are completely submerged in water.
Hydrilla and Vallisneria.
Give some examples of aquatic plants that do not have a streamlined body.
Squids and octopuses do not have streamlined bodies and prefer to stay deep in the water.
