Maharashtra State Board Class 6 Science Force and Types of Force Textbook Exercises and Extra Question and Answers.

Choose the term to fill in the blanks.

(a) Force has to be applied to change the direction of a moving object.(moving, direction, force)
(b) When an elephant drags a wooden log over the land, the forces that are applied on the log are muscular force, gravitational force, and frictional force.
(c) A ball was set rolling on a large table. If its motion is to be changed, a force will have to be applied on it.
(d) The force of friction always acts against the motion.

Match the following :

Group ‘A’ Group ‘B’
(i) An ox pulling a cart (c) Muscular force
(ii) Lifting a heavy iron object with a crane (d) Gravitational force
(iii) Weighing with a spring balance (e) Frictional force
(iv) Applying brakes to a bicycle (e) Frictional force
(v) Picking up pieces of paper with a plastic scale (b) Electrostatic force

One or more forces are acting in the following examples. Name them.

(a) An object falling from a tall building – Gravitational force.
(b) An aeroplane flying in the sky – Thrust, Lift, Drag, and Weight (Gravitational force).
(c) Squeezing sugarcane juice with a squeezer – Muscular force and Frictional force.
(d) Winnowing foodgrain – Muscular force and Frictional force.

Why?

Q: (a) Machines are oiled from time to time.
A: Machines are oiled from time to time to reduce friction When two parts of a machine move against each other, friction occurs, which causes wear and tear. Machines function smoothly and efficiently when they are oiled to reduce friction and wear.

Q: (b) An object thrown upwards comes down after reaching a point.
A: When an object is thrown upward, it moves against gravity for a time, which is what causes it to rise. The force of gravity pulls an object downwards after it reaches a point. Eventually, gravity slowed down the object’s speed and it fell.

Q: (c) Powder is sprinkled on a carrom board.
A: A carrom board is sprinkled with powder to reduce friction. When powder is sprinkled on the board, it forms a bond between the pieces and the board, reducing friction, making play more enjoyable and pieces moving more easily.

(d) The ramp at a railway station has a rough surface.
At a railway station, the ramp surface is rough, which increases friction. The rough surface provides better grip for pedestrians. It prevents slipping and provides a safe passage.

Write answers to the following questions in your own words.

(a) What are the things that can be done by applying force ?
Things that can be done by applying force include lifting, pushing, pulling, stopping, or moving. You can apply force to lift a heavy bag, push a car, pull a door, stop a bicycle, and move a book across a table.

(b) What is meant by weight ?
A weight is a measurement of gravitational pull exerted on a mass object. It is usually expressed in pounds or kilograms. Object weight varies based on its location, because gravity is directly proportional to the weight.

(c) Which machines run on muscular force ?
Muscle-powered machines require human effort to operate. Among them are hand pumps, hand-operated tools, sewing machines, and other hand-operated tools and equipment that are powered by muscular strength.
