About 2400 years ago, Socrates was born in Athens. He was an outstanding philosopher who spent his life seeking truth. He believed in thinking and reasoning. When he found out that his people were living in a world of ignorance and superstition, he asked them questions and told them not to follow anything blindly.

A group of judges asked Socrates if he would renounce his views or die. Socrates chose death but did not renounce his views. He would die by drinking poison that he drank smiling. He was 70 years old when he died.

In 1929, Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta as a black American. After being inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of nonviolence, Martin led a peaceful movement for equality with whites. His movement gained popularity and he received a Nobel Prize in 1964. At the age of 40, he was assassinated in Memphis.

 

[Q] Write a short note on mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi was born in Porbandar in Gujarat on 2nd October 1869 and studied law at the University of London. He became a barrister and went on an assignment to South Africa, where many Indians lived.

Seeing how Indians and blacks were treated very badly disturbed him and he fought for them for more than 20 years. When Gandhi came to India, he joined the struggle against British rule. He led many movements against the British and was jailed many times. In spite of his imprisonment, he followed the principles of truth and nonviolence, and the British were eventually forced to leave, leading to the freedom of Indians in 1947.
