Why the Rabaris of Kutch had to migrate in summer?

Animals are the main source of livelihood for the Rabaris of Kutch. Sheep, goats, and camels are their main sources of income. Due to the large area of desert in Kutch, most of the region receives very little rainfall during the monsoon. In Kutch, water and fodder are limited during summer months. Due to this, the rabari of Kutch have to migrate in search of water and fodder in order to save their livestock.

Indian nomads were known as Vanzaras. Vanzaras were used by Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji to transport grain and goods to the markets of Delhi. During the Mughal period, they were also used to load oxen and sell grain in the cities. The vanjaras brought grains and goods to the Mughal army via ox carts during the war.

    1. The Rabaris of Kutch depend on sheep, goats and camels for their livelihood. Kutch receives very little rainfall in the monsoon and most of the area is desert.

      Due to lack of water and fodder in Kutch, it is difficult for Rabaris to maintain their animals. This is why they migrate so that they can get enough resources and their animals remain safe.
