Indian National Congress –Â
The growth of educated Indians was started by a man named A.O. Hume. Their first meeting took place in Bombay. (Now Mumbai). There were 72 delegates from all over India at the meeting. The first president was W.C. Bonnerjee. After a period of time, the Indian National Congress became popular and strong and inspired the common people to love their country.
Mangal Pandey served as a soldier in the British army in India. He attacked a British officer near Calcutta (now Kolkata) on March 29, 1857. On April 8, 1857, he was hanged.

Why did the Revolt of 1857 occur?
The Revolt of 1857 began in Meerut then spread to Delhi and then to other parts of India. In British army camps, there was a rumor that the cartridges which were given to the soldiers to use in their rifles and which had to be inscribed by the soldiers to be used were greased with cow and pig fat. This angered and hurt the Hindu-Muslim religion. They revolted and refused to obey their officers.
