Makar Sankranti is one of the important festivals of Hindus and is celebrated in almost all parts of India.
This festival is celebrated on the 14th or 15th of January every year.
On this day the sun enters the sign of Capricorn that’s why it is also known as Makar Sankranti.
On this day people take a holy dip in rivers like Narmada and Ganga which is believed to bring prosperity and happiness.
The day marks the end of winter and the beginning of summer means, the nights are shorter and the day starts getting longer.
Maharashtra people wish tilgud ghaya and god god bola to each other.
In South India, it is celebrated as Pongal which is mainly a harvest festival.
In north India, it is celebrated as Lohri with a bonfire to mark the end of winter.
In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, this festival is named khichdi. People of Central India cook khichdi on that day.
In Gujarat, it is called uttrayana, which is celebrated by flying kites. Makar Sankranti is also known as the kite festival.
People make ladoos made with sesame seeds [til] and jaggery and share them with friends and relatives.
It marks the end of the winter season.
