It was observed that a pencil sharpener gets attracted by both the poles of a magnet, although its body is made of plastic. Name a material that might have been used to make some part of it.

The blade of a pencil sharpener is made of iron which is a magnetic material. Due to this a pencil sharpener gets attracted towards both poles of a magnet.

Column I shows different positions in which one pole of a magnet is placed near the other. Column II indicates the resulting action between them for each situation. Fill in the blanks.

Column I Column II
N − N Repulsion like charges repel each other
N − S Attraction [unlike charges attract each other]
S − N Attraction [unlike charges]
S − S Repulsion [like charges]

Write any two properties of a magnet.

A magnet has the following properties:

  • The poles of a magnet are always north and south.
  • Magnetic poles that are like repel each other and poles that are unlike attract each other.

Where are the poles of a bar magnet located?

Two poles are located at each end of a bar magnet.i.e. North and south

A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How can you find out the location of the north pole?

It is possible to determine the magnet’s poles by suspending it freely. A freely suspended bar magnet always points north-south. An arrow pointing in the north direction represents the north pole of the magnet, while an arrow pointing in the south direction represents the south pole of the magnet.
